Are you tired of being embarrassed about your bad posture?

     You've seen the pictures and you know your posture needs help. But what to do about it? What if you could change it? Maybe you've tried your best to remember to stand up straight but you just can't seem to hold it long enough to make a difference?

     You've put the pieces together and figured out that your posture is causing your neck and back pain. Believe it or not, that is an amazing discovery. 

     As a Chiropractor, I've treated many patients that had no idea their bad posture was contributing to their back pain, while others simply didn't know what to do about it.

     They tried most of the same things you did; trying to stand up straight, buying posture bras and posture supports, they changed their chair, maybe even went out and bought a new bed. Nothing worked.

    

There is a solution to your neck and back pain.

     Many people just want to wear something in a well-meaning attempt to change it now. They may think they can just change their chair or mattress. That's just not going to work. My patients have tried all this stuff. I've heard the stories and watched their frustration until they either decide they're going to learn to live with bad posture and back pain, or they decide they want to do something about it.

 

Are your Rounded Shoulders causing you shoulder pain?

    How many doctors will you see? How many massages and pills can you take for this problem? I see this as being one of the main reasons someone comes into my office with shoulder pain. They can't remember any trauma they might have had, because they are only considering traumas like car accidents and falls.

     They forget about the daily, repetitive trauma of gravity pulling on your shoulders that are totally out of their normal position and alignment. This is primarily due to the overdeveloped muscles on the front side and the underused, stretched out muscles on the back side of their shoulders. This can be changed!

 

Are you worried about developing a "Hump"?

     I watched my grandmother suffer the effects of her Dowager's Hump. I loved her dearly but secretly thought to myself, "I sure hope that doesn't happen to me." It didn't look good but, more importantly, I knew she suffered in pain everyday with her back. Have you seen this before and thought the same thing?

     There may be some nutritional aspects to the "hump" and some family risk factors, but I sincerely believe that most humps can be prevented. Some patients tell me that they already cannot fasten their bra in the back. They have already gotten used to fastening in the front and moving it around. If you cannot fasten your bra in the back, how long can you ignore this warning sign before you decide to take action?

 

Are you concerned about your Forward Head Posture?

     The first time you noticed this about yourself, you knew it wasn't normal. Plus, you figured it was likely causing some of the headaches, neck and upper back pain you've been dealing with off and on. What can you do? You have to use the computer everyday and that's when it hurts.

     You have to counteract what your normal daily activities are doing to your head and neck. Do you expect that this problem will just get better on its own? You know it won't. The bad news is this will most likely get worse if you don't do something about it. The good news is it won't take nearly as much time and effort to fix your neck as it did to mess it up in the first place.

 

I don't care how many websites you visit or how many books and supports you buy, nothing will change until you do this.

     You're going to have to exercise. You have to change how your muscles work. Someone had to tell you. You can't keep wasting your time on things that are going to give you false hope and that can't possibly work while your posture just gets worse and worse.

    That Doesn't Have To Be You.

     Yes, you have to exercise, but I don't mean for you to go jump on the treadmill or start riding a bicycle. (Even though those things are good for you.) If all it took was any ol' exercise, why do so many people at the gym have bad posture?

 

You need specific exercises designed to get your posture straightened out in the least amount of time to get you the best results possible.

     Exercises that are practical, something you won't mind doing. Something you don't have to "remember" all the time. Just something that improves your posture as efficiently and as quickly as possible.    

     As a Chiropractor, I see the negative effects of bad posture in my practice everyday.   You're in pain and you can't take it anymore. It's sometimes only then that many people decide to take their back problem and their bad posture seriously. 

     I see how bones start to break down over time. I see how the muscles are effected. How they change shape and grow longer. The longer your muscles get, the weaker they can become.

     While your back muscles are getting longer, your front muscles are usually getting shorter. You've seen it, just look around. The people that are hunched over, developing that hump on their upper back have short muscles in the front and long muscles in the back.

          Once you've held this position for a long, long time (years), the effects become more and more permanent. It becomes harder to change. It becomes something that takes work and can be difficult to get the fast results that someone really wants.

     Still, when I tried to explain to my patients what they should be doing about it, there just wasn't much available to give them to follow. I just wanted something that said,

 

"If you do this, you will have better posture. Period"

         

          I had a couple of handouts to give them. Something a well meaning person designed, but just wasn't totally what I was looking for. I would hand this beautiful piece of paper to my patients with my "modifications" on it.

   

They didn't do the exercises.

 

          "Too boring," they would say. Or "I thought I understood how to do it when I left your office, but when I got home I got confused." 

          I could go on and on about the wonderful list of excuses my patients would give, but the point is, they were just like you. They knew they had bad posture. Most of them even had proof on x-ray! They could already see the damage to their spine and I still couldn't get them to follow the instructions on a piece of paper.

 

Maybe if I made my own piece of paper...

 

          Years ago, I set out to make sure that I had good posture. If I was going to be a chiropractor and tell people about their spines all day, I didn't want to do it without good posture myself! I developed my own routine from years of experience and trial and error. I really felt I had fine tuned my routine to make it as easy and simple as possible.

(I didn't want to have a routine so long that I couldn't even remember it!)

          So I came up with my own wonderfuly designed piece of paper that I could hand to my patients. Guess what happened... they still didn't work on their posture!

 

This was getting frustrating...

 

     My patient kidded me one day, "Dr. Natalie, I just can't get excited about my posture. I want to change it, but I don't even think about it until I see you. Maybe if you came over and showed me how to do the exercises every day."

           Hmmm... maybe they were on to something.
