Posture Information | Back Support Cushion

If your car doesn't provide adequate lumbar support, you may have considered using a back support cushion. If your chair at work hurts your
lower back and your boss isn't ready to consider getting you a new one, a back support cushion is likely on your wish list.
But should you even consider buying one? Sure it will feel good now, but what about long term? Maybe long term isn't part of the equation
right now, you just know that your back hurts and you want to do something about it. Fair enough. I totally understand, but let's consider a few
things before you make this purchase.
First, most braces and supports are excellent... when you're in crisis. Your back hurts, you're in pain without any additional support and you
need to get through your day. I recommend braces in my practice regularly, but only to help my patients get through their daily activities while
they are having so much pain.
Think about the back support cushion like you would taking an over-the-counter medication. They help you get through the episode, but you know
you can't live on them. You know that long term you'll be asking for a whole new set of problems if you don't address the cause of the problem
and keep the symptoms from flaring back up.
Adding cushions and supports to your chairs is a sure sign (a symptom) that you would likely benefit from improving your posture. If your back
hurts now and you need to get through your day to be able to keep working, get a back support cushion and keep plugging away.
Just make sure that you start to take steps to strengthen your posture muscles and build your own back support made up of muscle. You'll find you won't need any extra devices to get you out
of pain and back to work. Your back will thank you.
