back support pillow for car imageBefore you go out and buy a back support pillow for car use, you should understand what you're really doing to yourself. Your reasons for buying a back support may be totally valid and correct, but you should probably understand some of the bad habits and problems that other well-meaning people have done.

Are you seeking out a back support pillow for car use because your back hurts when you drive? (I'm not psychic, I'm just guessing here.) Why does your back hurt? What is it about your car seat that is leading to an increase in back pain and spasm when you sit for extended periods?

There are two likely issues. One is that your car seat is just not well suited for you. Maybe you were the model they had in mind when the seats were created. You could just be a bit too short, too tall, or weigh just a bit too much for the ideal created by the car seat designer.

You also may not be utilizing the right positioning of the seat. Your seat may be too far back, or just leaning too far back. You may not look as cool as you might like when you're driving, but your back may feel better with just some simple adjustments to your seat before you invest in a back support pillow for car use.

The other likely scenario is that your back muscles have grown too weak to adequately support you. If this is the case, a back support may actually continue this issue and make your back pain worse over time. In order for your back muscles to give you the right support to keep you out of pain, they have to be used.

Back muscles are like any other muscles in your body. If you don't use them, you lose them. Increasing your back strength is not as difficult as it may seem and will make your need for ongoing back supports, braces and any other device you may be considering unnecessary.

The logic in looking for a back support makes sense. Your back hurts, get something to support it. It's just a slippery slope and I'm more hopeful that you will get the chance to strengthen your posture muscles before every seat in your home, car and at work is filled with pillows and other supports that may actually be making your problems worse.
